Exposure to artificial light is another factor contributing to declining eye health. In India, 14 students out of 100 who are older than seven require glasses. Eye conditions can have a detrimental effect on a child's quality of life, eyesight, education, and psychological development, especially if untreated refractive errors are present. It is more important than ever to maintain optimal eye health in a society where devices and artificial lighting rule. Ayurveda, the Indian medical system, offers holistic methods to maintain and improve ocular well-being, while modern medicine delivers efficient treatments for a range of eye illnesses.

An Ayurvedic Perspective of Eye Health

The eye is considered an important sense organ by Ayurveda, as it aids in our understanding and navigation of our surroundings. According to Ayurveda, the eyes are among the most important sense organs since they allow us to see form, color, and light. Ayurvedic principles state that the Pitta dosha, which is associated with fire and transformation, governs the eyes. Pitta encourages keen awareness and unobstructed vision when it is in equilibrium. Pitta imbalances, on the other hand, can cause a number of eye conditions, such as dryness, irritation, and blurred vision. One of Ashtanga Ayurveda's eight clinical specializations, ShalakyaTantra, focuses on managing and caring for the eyes. According to Ayurveda, irregular seasonal cycles, misapplication of intelligence, and unsuitable contact with visual objects are the three main causes of ocular illnesses.

A balanced diet, a healthy weight, frequent exercise, using protective eyewear, and quitting smoking are all important for preserving eye health.

1.     Eye ExercisesSimple eye exercises are advised by Ayurveda to strengthen the ocular muscles, increase circulation, and improve visual clarity. Blinking, rotating your eyes, and palming are a few efficient workouts that you can add into your everyday practice.

2.     Appropriate Sleep Practices: In Ayurveda, adequate sleep is crucial to preserving the best possible health of the eyes. In order to encourage restorative sleep and reduce eye strain, it is recommended to establish a consistent sleep pattern, minimize screen time before bed, and create a peaceful sleeping environment.

Eye Wash: For consistently clear vision, use cold water, Lodhra, or Amalak. An effective Ayurvedic treatment for clearing and revitalizing the eyes is Triphala Eye Wash. To relieve redness, weariness, and irritation, steep triphala powder in water for a whole night. Then, drain the solution and use it as an eye wash.

Ushajalapana and NasajalapanaDrink water every day in the early hours of the morning to ensure clear vision and cleanse the GIT.

GandushaTo preserve vision, take 2-4 mouthfuls of cold water per day.

Anjana (collyrium): There are two varieties: Sauveeranjana and Rasananjana. It is applied to the lashes every day and once every other day to stimulate and secrete.

SnanaBathing in cold water, or water that is only slightly colder than body temperature, helps to maintain eye health.

ShiroabhayangaApplying medicinal oil to the head on a daily basis helps to avoid diseases of the sense organs and strengthens the eyes.

Yoga and Panchakarma for Eye Care

1.     NetraTarpana: To hydrate and nourish the ocular tissues, medicinal ghee is applied around the eyes during NetraTarpana. People with dry eyes, eye strain, and degenerative diseases like cataracts and glaucoma benefit most from this therapy.

2.     Nasya: Anutaila is a technique for administering medication to the nasal cavity with the aim of supporting the Nasya organs, which are directly connected to the sensorineural structures of the brain. This therapy maintains the integrity of other sense organs while enhancing taste, smell, hearing, and vision.

 3.     Yoga asanas like Netikirya and Trataka help to improve vision clarity: A yoga technique called palming helps ease eye strain and stop refractive problems. Palming can help avoid the development of cataracts and Timira, a refractive defect, particularly after meals. Proper functioning of the eyes requires Pranayama or the expansion of Prana's dimension. As sense organs can only detect objects in the presence of the mind, mental equilibrium is essential for optimal eye function.
